What even is a democracy? Certainly the Greeks would have identified our system with oligarchy, not democracy. Greek democracy worked based on lot. Our system of voting in elections was inherently identified with oligarchy and horsetrading by the Greeks, not democracy.
News media is very consolidated, but thankfully their viewership is at an all time low, and pretty much nobody has trust in the legacy media anymore. It's a vanishing selection of Boomers who still have any time for the legacy media, and as they die out or wake up it's unclear who the media is even going to be talking to anymore, other than themselves.
Their only function now is to set the "mainstream view", and to drum up support for perpetual war abroad and perpetual emergency powers at home.
I do think people are slowly waking up. It's hard to dive into the deep end suddenly. Most people don't know what to do if they can't trust the media as gospel. Inculcating the skills needed to think critically, research, and make up your own mind is crucial.
