Hello Joel, a well thought out and articulated article. I watch in horror as the ABC has been turned into a narrow cast, syrupy drivel, magazine stylized media outlet. Shows like Q&A, 7.30. ABC Melbourne Radio especially after 10am and many more have been garroted. I truly hope that enough Australian voters that care about a free, well resourced and independent ABC vote for a political party that has that as there policy. The way the MSM media is concentrated in the hands of 3 Right Wing extremist Media Baron Oligarchs would make any Authoritarian Government proud. It needs to change before it's too late and the IPA get there wish and it's broken up and privatized. The first few things i would do with the ABC is sack the board and have a new board selected and appointed by the Independent ABC Board selection panel, remove any Political interference including protection of Budgets that are set every 5 years by an Independent panel, remove all short term staff contracts and adhere to the Charter with providing the Australian public with honest and courageous media content with integrity and most well informed, diverse news content, current affairs, science programs, Foreign affairs Journalist employed from diverse back rounds, ethnicity, class etc. Anyway i could go on and on. Change at the board level and insuring independent oversight, as you mention, including adherence to the charter, are good ways to enable this journalism that is needed more than ever. The essence of the craft needs to be spoken about.
