Signs reading “Better public transport,” “Cheaper childcare,” and “Free TAFE” were pinned to the railing at Sydney Town Hall as a demonstrator was forcefully removed by NSW Police amid jeers and applause at the NSW Labor conference. Two Labor member activists had unfurled a Palestinian flag from the balcony in silent protest at the party’s support for Israel and the oppression of those in NSW who do not share that position.

But the iteration of the Labor Party that now stands before the people of Australia is far removed from the bones of Jack Lang, Ben Chifley, and Gough Whitlam. Among the rusted-on members—using the word “comrade” as they greeted one another at NSW Labor’s night of nights—there were stirrings of objection. Not as many, however, as the majority of Australians would hope, as one of their “comrades’ was manhandled by NSW Police.

The 78 percent of Australians who oppose Israel’s actions were not represented in the sea of red that draped the Town Hall. Nor were the majority of NSW residents concerned about draconian police powers—at least, they were not speaking up as they once would have in the classic idea of what these conferences represent.

Premier Chris Minns and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, fronting the event, have both driven Labor vehicles with pro-Zionist decals for the entirety of the period in which Israel has conducted what many, including the UN, have described as genocide—and well into their careers before. On Saturday, Minns spoke about debt and deficit reduction, the infrastructure boom, education and health gains, and his claims on public safety training—all while expanding the police-state powers he now wields. On Sunday, Albanese spoke ambiguously about broader cost-of-living relief, housing, and economic management under federal Labor, while praising his government’s alignment with Minns on big projects and infrastructure.

Public Assembly Restriction Declarations (PARDs) still shape the cadence of Sydney’s streets, alongside expanded move-on and face-covering powers in the post-Bondi environment. NSW has passed more anti-protest laws in the last 20 years than any other state. According to CIVICUS, Australia’s civic space is rated as “narrowed,” with concerns around whistle-blower prosecutions, anti-protest laws that clash with international obligations, and the arrest of climate and pro-Palestinian protesters. Along with climate protesters jailed, union protesters arrested, the anti-weapons industry protesters carted away, and anti-Herzog protesters beaten and bloodied for resisting a representative of a country committing genocide—the sight of a rusted-on Labor member being dragged up the stairs by police for a silent protest, involving a Palestinian banner unfurled over a rail, paints a vivid picture of what the conference environment has become.

The legendary environment of Australian Labor conferences is no stranger to raw, unfiltered passion—argy-bargy debates spilling into drunken arguments, the occasional punch thrown in factional heat, and walkouts or expulsions that became folklore of a party still wrestling with its soul. From the turbulent 1950s Split to wild state gatherings where left and right factions physically clashed (as in the 2003 Victorian brawl at Melbourne Town Hall), these events were chaotic theatres of democracy. Dissent was noisy and expected; grassroots voices, union militants, and ideological warriors could erupt without the immediate threat of polite removal.

In contrast, modern Labor under Anthony Albanese and Chris Minns has evolved into a more disciplined, power-prioritising machine—less a movement of ideological vision and more a neoliberal footy team where rusted-on supporters cheer the ejection of their own for disrupting the script on topics like Palestine. Albanese, who rose through NSW’s hard-left faction but helped consolidate its pragmatic redesign in the Hawke-Keating era, has embodied this shift. His approach—skilled factional deals and electability over purity—has enabled a right-leaning NSW machine where Minns governs more conservatively than his Liberal predecessor on issues from protest laws to union power.

What we saw in Sydney was the sharp end of Australia’s Labor Right in NSW, approved by a Prime Minister long seen as a “left faction” voice. Minns is less concerned about mandated nurse-to-patient ratios and more focused on curtailing public freedoms in the name of security. He has been a pitbull on these issues since taking leadership. Albanese, for his part, came up through the hard left but has long prioritised power, deals, and electability—a John Howard-esque operator who helped reshape the party in a more neoliberal direction.

A 2020 Jacobin article titled “Labor’s Anthony Albanese Is Not a Friend of Australia’s Left—And He Never Was” argues that Albanese was instrumental in hammering the neoliberal redesign of the party in the shadow of Hawke’s Accord. He rose to prominence by collaborating with the Right to crush genuine left-wing elements in NSW—an environment in which Chris Minns would later join the party’s right faction and discover that personality types like his own now held the lion’s share of influence. It was an environment Minns would thrive in, thanks in no small part to the groundwork laid by figures like Albanese.

The scenes at the conference in Sydney reflect the fruits of those efforts, and the proud neoliberal policy achievements spruiked to the audience. Labor supporters themselves have become less concerned about political outcomes and more concerned about supporting the footy team—an approach that only leads to haemorrhage in primary votes. One-eyed supporters cheer blindly for the club, forgetting they used to critique the decisions of the coach, the hearts of some of the players who weren’t playing for the club, and proudly remind the executives that the team was owned by the people. Not anymore. All those in the room that day who applauded the dragging of a Labor member speaking in the spirit of the conference came to the event stepping around the genocide their party has supported militarily, economically, and diplomatically—ignoring the public freedoms being removed from them by Minns—all for a win on the board for the footy team.

The modern Labor Party, in all of its iterations, has become a political animal at the expense of everything, even its projection. The Labor that came back after a decade in the wilderness of opposition came back a different beast. Once-democratic state and federal Labor conferences have hushed dissent on AUKUS, corruption, and support for Israel. State conferences have blocked opposition to fossil fuel exploration, revulsion to gambling, or abhorrence to party links to nations committing genocide. Some may have jeered out of habit at the disruption before Minns came in to kick off his big day, but others may have jeered with clarion intent. The rusted-ons have gone from people who opposed the Iraq War with Simon Crean, to people who supported world-first anti-asylum seeker policies under Gillard and Rudd, to people who tacitly support the Zionist status quo of Labor when that means military, economic, and diplomatic backing of Israel—the most concentrated killer of children and innocents this century.

At this Minns conference, a grassroots revolt forced tighter pokie concessions—red meat for those who still believe they matter. But there was nothing on Israel, nothing recognising UN, ICC, or ICJ findings, and nothing addressing the police state closing in on a marginalised majority. That group was removed from the theatre. They will find it hard to return.

After the disruption the day before, Albanese spoke on Sunday, praising the hallowed floor of Sydney Town Hall. Flogging the nostalgic dead horse while waxing lyrical about his days as a young delegate in 1983, he channelled the energy of Labor’s titans of old—as he so often does. Yet as he spoke, a Lebanese-Australian Labor member silently walked the aisles with a Palestinian flag. His words echoed hollow, starkly contrasted with the dignified objection of the protest, while the rusted-ons clapped anyway to the regalia of those old Labor skeletons. But it doesn’t feel right anymore. The same city of Sydney hosting the NSW Labor Conference—the same city that has seen a rapid decline in public freedoms on par with authoritarian nations—is also hosting a Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion that has primarily featured submissions from Australia’s Zionist Jewish community, whose findings will help determine the future of social cohesion for us all.

All those who clapped and jeered, do so perhaps not knowing what they do. In the current environment, the footy-team rusted-ons face a clear choice: if they refuse to stop supporting the team no matter what, they must demand far more than they are getting, and support those with the steel to ask for more. The party faithful can either throw themselves on the wheel and force change, as the brave protesters did, or descend into monsters jeering alongside the captured executive that now runs the party with no apparent moral limit. The old conference environment was the sign of a healthy party—comrades who rubbed shoulders but kept the machine grounded: the real footy fans. It is now an environment our Prime Minister can no longer recall accurately in anecdote, let alone the political animals who now swim with the sharks of modern Labor and jeer at acts of courage, and it could ultimately fail them at the polls.

It’s already halfway through 2026, and if you look at what is happening on the planet you can be forgiven for showing dismay at recent footage of Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan celebrating the independence of the state of Israel and announcing a long-term health partnership. “Let us toast the people of Israel,” said the Victorian Premier. The partnership is aimed at strengthening collaboration between Victoria’s medical research institutions and Israel’s hospitals and innovation ecosystem, but it also seemed aimed at improving public perception of Israel—not as a destroyer of innocent lives in the Middle East as is currently perceived, but as a world-leading cutting-edge healthcare provider.

“I want Victoria to share once again in these breakthroughs, not just admire them from afar.”

Israel is accused of the crime of genocide by the United Nations, its leaders are wanted by the International Criminal Court, its army has broken through the civilian population of Gaza where it still kills a child a day post-ceasefire. The world has admired them as a nation of blood-crazed supremacists, who overwhelmingly as a population want to see the ethnic cleansing of Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon, and come to see the country as a nation of brutal and unreasonable killers that need to be stopped by the international community. A large majority of Victorians and Australians are appalled by Israel’s near three-year genocide and unrelenting propaganda assault via social media, the legacy press, and a compromised bipartisan political class—Allan’s hospital partnership with them is disgraceful.

Premier Allan sees it differently: “...it is through partnerships like this, partnerships of discovery, partnerships of progress that will help Australians reconnect with what Israel has given the world and it sends an important message that Victoria and Israel’s relationship is built on shared values, real human connections, and practical knowledge that makes a positive difference in our lives.” Shared values?

Do we share values with the country whose healthcare system contributed to the illegal harvesting of thousands of organs, including Palestinians killed by Israeli forces? Who only made international organ trafficking illegal under 20 years ago? Do our doctors share values with the medically sterilised Ethiopian Jews who were injected with broad-spectrum birth control disguised as vaccines? How about the flayed bodies of Palestinians whose skin is frozen in Israel’s skin banks (the largest in the world)?

The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne has a world-leading premature infant capability. Israel left babies to die and decompose in their incubators in a children’s ward of a hospital in Gaza. Doctors in the now destroyed hospitals of Gaza would see children brought before the operating table with sniper wounds in their skulls and abdomens; some days the doctors picked up patterns that the snipers were targeting specific parts of children’s bodies; but we are to share in the health of Victorians with these people?

Israel destroyed the last hospital in Northern Gaza in 2025. Israeli soldiers dressed as Arab healthcare staff to assassinate a Palestinian man in hospital. Palestinian doctors are raped to death in prison or tortured to inches of their life. Allan’s statement is callous and devastating. This isn’t a failure to read the room—it is an ideological endorsement in the ruins of a genocide, and the most rancid offering to share the act of healing with those who take life so indiscriminately.

“Shared (fucking) values”?!

Allan holds up a glass of wine at a fancy Zionist event, keyed into the same interests as her predecessor Dan Andrews, and they both represent the personality types that now hold public office in Australia. Morally bankrupt, politically obsessed, and utterly sociopathic as a consequence—the modern political operator is a largely detached and frenetic individual with more in common with the business world than representing electorates. This bipartisan cohort, in Victoria’s case, is overtly compromised by long-term private relationships and public-to-private pipelines: the Victorian Racing Committee, Crown Casino, Transurban, and the Melbourne-based Jewish billionaires who hold incredible power over the political class.

The corporate sociopaths who wear human masks in public office have shed the cloak of morality that they claim to possess, and only see the need for preservation through power. The powerful and wealthy Zionist interest groups in Victoria and around the nation act as beacons to this status quo, and the callous political judgement that allows the modern politician to sell out the population on housing, health, education and welfare for adjacent private interest groups, is the same judgement that sees Allan have the gall to announce a hospital partnership with the preeminent destroyer of hospitals on the planet.

It’s a disturbing disconnect, an indictment on the mental health of cold modern corporate leaders, and a terrifying wake-up call as to what kind of people they are, and what calculus they are prepared to make for powerful interests.

Allan’s speech echoed a frustration from this powerful Zionist community, who have seen public opinion swing harshly against their supremacist ideology, that has seen hundreds of thousands killed in Gaza and Lebanon, and an unreasonable war against Iran that currently puts the global economy on the verge of collapse. But her speech also cut against the grain of public opinion.

In Australia, far away from these flashpoints, our national essence has been extruded through a Zionist framework. ASIO Chief Mike Burgess has warned that the biggest threat to Australia are Iranian assassins, saying he ‘believes’ the mastermind of an arson attack on the Adass Synagogue in Melbourne is being employed by Tehran to sow terror. But Burgess has allowed Israeli President Isaac Herzog to take private meetings at our intelligence headquarters; his department has not been able to provide any valuable narrative on the Bondi shootings, and the remit of our intelligence services seems to be gravitated around providing hand-made Israeli narratives that seem to fly against the national interest. With intelligence, defence, diplomacy, media and public policy being influenced and controlled by Zionist interest, and the public so highly attuned to this pervasive control, Allan’s hospital announcement comes across as morbid and mortifying—it doesn’t conjure feelings of acceptance and admiration for Israel.

Hours after Allan’s speech, The Lancet called for the suspension of the Israeli Medical Association, making a statement: “Genocide in Gaza is a defining ethical test for the global public health community. Silence is not an option.” But in Australia, silence is the status quo. Currently the medical regulator AHPRA has baked in new measures that equate criticism of Jewish doctors with antisemitism. In June 2026, AHPRA adopted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism as a reference tool for its regulatory work in a joint statement with Australia’s Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism. Critics, including health practitioner groups and the Australia Palestine Advocacy Network, have warned this creates a chilling effect, risks weaponising vexatious complaints against doctors who criticise Israel’s actions in Gaza, and may suppress legitimate political speech and advocacy by conflating criticism of Israeli government policy with antisemitism.

“To a Jewish homeland safe and secure and to her people resilient and free. Happy Independence Day to the state of Israel.”, said a Premier who has given up the pretence of pragmatic impartiality and sage leadership. Allan said words that would be echoed by most of the bereft current politicians in Australia.

Whether it’s James Patterson doing his maiden speech to Parliament on the need to support Israel, whether it be Pauline Hanson wearing an Israel scarf into the Federal Senate while her billionaire benefactor offers up chunks of Queensland to Israeli settlers, Penny Wong broadly grinning while shaking Herzog’s hand, the Teals showing up to Zionist events, or Allan talking up Israel with a form of indignation through the public opinion of her voters—even the Greens cherry-picking their condemnations around its own liberal Zionist interests—there aren’t many politicians in line with the Australian public opinion on Israel. And that is an issue.

Allan may hope that “Australians reconnect with what Israel has given the world” by merging Victorian hospitals with them, but she hopes in vain. But does she even care what most of us think? There aren’t many on the left or the right that think Israel deserves anything but utter condemnation. Not many Victorians want to connect with Israel ever again, and they are struggling to connect with politicians who over-insist they do. This hospital announcement, amongst the dozens of destroyed hospitals in occupied Palestine, is a diabolical decision by the Victorian Premier, and a window into the nature of her conscience.

Gina Rinehart’s headline-grabbing speech at the June 2026 Townsville Bush Summit has exposed a fatal contradiction at the heart of One Nation. Fresh from championing Pauline Hanson at the National Press Club, Australia’s richest mining magnate offered free islands to Elon Musk and free land plus taxpayer-assisted relocation to Israeli defence manufacturers — moves that directly clash with One Nation’s core “Australia First”, anti-immigration, and protectionist brand.

While Hanson speaks the language of looking after ordinary Australians against foreign interests and elite overreach, her biggest donor embodies the very billionaire globalism and selective foreign favouritism that One Nation claims to oppose. The Rinehart/Hanson alliance is a glaring example of why One Nation is not a genuine voice for the downtrodden, but a vehicle increasingly captured by elite interests, Trump-style foreign policy, and moral blind spots that its own base largely rejects.

Barely had Pauline Hanson finished speaking for the “downtrodden Australian” with her familiar language of exclusion, protectionism, and hostility toward foreigners at the National Press Club, when Gina Rinehart took the stage in Townsville. Rather than addressing vital rural infrastructure or the struggles of regional workers, Rinehart instead offered up sparsely populated islands off the Australian coast — for free — to foreign tech billionaire Elon Musk to build satellite and launch facilities.

To many in the rural audience at this “bush summit,” the contrast was jarring: a self-proclaimed champion of Australian workers handing over national territory to one of the world’s richest men. But it didn’t end there.

Rinehart then doubled down, offering free land near Prairie or elsewhere around Townsville to Israeli defence specialists — complete with transport for their skilled workers, families and equipment. She urged the Israelis to settle and “develop and build their advanced war drones, and/or other advances in defence, and/or improve upon their Israeli-style domes,” so they could manufacture them in Australia and sell them back to the country for national security.

She closed her speech by telling the crowd to imitate a bulldozer sound, showing similarities to the chainsaw wielded by anarcho-libertarian Argentinean President Javier Milei, via Elon Musk. And to the sound of engines, the mining magnate invited Pauline Hanson up on stage and presented her with an orange toy bulldozer, to symbolise cutting the bureaucracy and red tape that somewhat inhibits people like her from eating the entire world (instead of most of it).

The people at the Bush Summit were present to hear about economic development, attracting major investment and issues to do with regional growth and infrastructure, and the mention of free rocket pads for Elon and a free Israeli settler colony near Pallarenda perhaps didn’t fit into the scope of the subject matter for some attendees. Speaking with the voice of someone with the disconnected confidence of a bubble wrapped billionaire nepobaby, Rinehart openly strutted about the Townsville stage like she owned the people looking at it, and took them for granted offering up her idea of an Israeli militarised settler colony and a billionaire launchpad off the coast. Echoing an ultra-Zionist position of One Nation shared more broadly.

Hanson is a devout Zionist. She herself has repeatedly criticised the Albanese Labor government for insufficient support of Israel, claiming it is “quite evident” that Labor “does not support the Israel people” due to electoral concerns in Muslim-heavy seats. She has strongly advocated for the adoption of the IHRA definition of antisemitism, condemned pro-Palestinian protests as “un-Australian,” and called for stronger action against antisemitism in Australia. She has also championed Israel’s support for Israel’s actions following the October 7, 2023 (which a large majority of Australians oppose) whilst criticising calls for ceasefires that she views as weakening Israel’s position. Hanson is one of the most Zionist politicians in the country, and Rinehart’s position shared on the Townsville stage, was only validated by Hanson’s ascension at the the end of the spiel to the sound of bulldozers.

Gina represents the overfed elites of Australia, who have not felt the need to exude nuance or grace to hold their positions. Unlike the swagger of US and European mega rich, the Australian billionaire class lacks the preparedness and sheen of their friends abroad. While some of the more publicly curated billionaires like Zuckerberg, Gates and Bezos attempt to hide the diabolical nature of their wealth generation, rehearsing an outward facing figure that eludes some humanity and reasonableness — the rich in Australia are lavish and obscene.

Clive Palmer and Gina Rinehart embody the Australian legacy billionaire. Over-encumbered in body, mind and soul — disconnected from the reality of Australians, brutally callous in the way they communicate their will to exert their power, and awfully assumptive of the people in this country. There isn’t much love or fandom for a Rinehart, no billionaire mystique that can be adored by a bunch of tech bros, or a rags to riches story that can endear, just barrels of money and strongarmed publicity from a woman who for some reason still can’t look presentable with the combined wealth of several developing nations. The Hanson/Rinehart alliance is the new national benchmark of money and politics. Only more concentrated, and potentially more consequential.

At a time when US President Donald Trump remains deeply polarising — reviled by many on the left and some of his own base — Gina Rinehart has spent more time swanning around the Mar-a-Lago social scene than most Australian billionaires could dream of. Whether at her Palm Beach mansion or Trump’s events, she stands out as one of Australia’s most prominent champions of Trump-style politics. It was Trump-style optics that tainted the backend of the Morrison government, Trump-style politics that helped deliver the Coalition’s disastrous 2025 election collapse under Peter Dutton, and it is the same Trump-style mania, bankrolled by Rinehart, that now drives One Nation’s ambitions and will likely shape its fortunes heading into 2028.

Many of those favouring One Nation don’t know the party from a bar of soap. And as it grows into a bigger political force, it faces real scrutiny. Most of its new support comes from protest voters — people sick of housing costs, childcare struggles, immigration chaos, and cost-of-living pain. But they aren’t signing up for what lies just under the fresh orange paint, or what comes out of Gina Rinehart’s mouth.

Aside from the money from billionaires who don’t give a fuck about marginalised Australians, One Nation claims to be tough on crime when its senior strategist and campaign director Sean Black is a convicted rapist who has seen prison, its SA candidate Aoi Baxter is wanted in the UK for failing to attend court for inappropriate touching, fellow SA Candidate Bruce Preece has a record of domestic violence, and another candidate Adrian Deeth has breached a family violence order fifteen times. From a lack of a cogent policy platform, and self-admitted small party problems impacting its big party ambitions, to unelectable and anti-social candidates, and a loudmouth billionaire with hugely unpopular takes; the party is set to wiggle under a microscope.

To take government, One Nation needs to fill around 70 federal seats with decent candidates. Even to hold the balance of power, it needs far fewer — but the quality (and criminality) of the people they’re pre-selecting barely get a mention. But people talk. The increasingly redundant media is too busy pumping up Hanson’s wheels to ask the obvious questions, while social media is figuring things out for themselves.

It is what lies beyond the protest vote that One Nation needs to realise. The friends it has made along the way, and the people it chooses to associate with, will ultimately determine its future in this country. The Rinehart/Hanson marriage acts as one of the reminders of why One Nation is a disingenuous political entity, born and motivated on the fuel of opportunism rather than the building blocks of pragmatism, and together they stand increasingly separate to the grievances they claim to understand and exploit to create division.

Gina Rinehart’s “free land for Israelis and islands for Musk” moment was more than a classic Gina whimsical speech, it has provided a revealing glimpse behind One Nation’s orange facade. Supporters drawn to Hanson’s rhetoric of protecting everyday Australians are increasingly discovering that the party’s biggest financial backer represents everything they claim to fight: unaccountable billionaire influence, foreign giveaways, and ultra-Zionist foreign policy at odds with mainstream Australian opinion.

As One Nation grows, the protest vote that fuels it will face harder scrutiny. The party cannot rail against foreign elites, crime, and broken trust while platforming a convicted rapist strategist, candidates with domestic violence records, policies of sovereign acquiescence, and a donor who treats sovereign Australian land as gifts for overseas billionaires and Israeli settler defence industries. Rinehart now has done the party a service by making the contradiction impossible to ignore, by reminding the electorate what the party is built on. One Nation’s future will not be decided by how loudly it attacks the major parties, but by whether voters decide its anti-establishment image is real — or just expensive orange paint over the same old elite capture.

The 2026 World Cup has become a Cup of Strife — a tournament marred by politicisation, exclusion, profiteering, and hypocrisy that has turned what should be a celebration of global unity into a symbol of division and imperial aggression. Hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada at a time when the globe is gripped by a polycrisis largely caused by one of the hosts, the event has exposed the collapse of sport’s neutrality. The USA, as the dominant host, is directly in conflict with guest nation Iran, threatening confrontation with co-host Mexico, while FIFA has surrendered its principles, allowing the tournament to descend into an unwelcoming fiasco that may mark the beginning of the end for truly global sporting events.

Dynamic ticket pricing and manufactured scarcity are nothing short of a total disgrace, stripping ordinary fans of access to the world’s premier tournament and transforming it into an elitist spectacle reserved for the wealthy. For the first time in World Cup history, FIFA embraced a real-time dynamic pricing model — similar to airline tickets or concert resale platforms — that has driven prices dramatically upward based on demand. Cheapest Category 3 tickets for the final have exceeded $5,000–$6,000, with some resale listings reaching an obscene $2.3 million. FIFA stands accused of deliberately creating artificial scarcity by releasing tickets in limited batches while profiting from its own official resale platform, which takes a 15% cut. The result is widespread exclusion of working-class fans and growing investigations by US attorneys general into price manipulation.

Then came the treatment of the players and officials themselves. The Senegalese and Uzbek national teams faced thorough searches. Iraqi star striker Aymen Hussein was questioned for seven hours in Chicago, and the national team photographer was detained for over 10 hours and denied entry despite holding a valid visa. Delegations from Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia received similarly harsh treatment. There is no precedent for such handling at prior World Cups.

Palestinian Football Association chief Jibril Rajoub was denied a US visa despite holding official FIFA accreditation, preventing him from attending key World Cup events and leaving him stranded in Mexico City after attending the opening match between Mexico and South Africa. As head of a FIFA member association, Rajoub’s exclusion stands as a stark contradiction to the tournament’s supposed spirit of global unity and inclusion — especially since the Palestinian team, though not qualified, typically sees its federation leadership invited to such celebrations. This denial echoes earlier incidents, such as Palestinian officials being barred from a FIFA Congress in Canada, highlighting a pattern of restrictive US immigration policies targeting Palestinian representatives amid heightened geopolitical tensions.

Another glaring example of harsh treatment involved Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, Somalia’s first potential World Cup referee. Despite holding a diplomatic passport and full FIFA accreditation, he was detained for 11 hours by US authorities over alleged “vetting concerns” linked to suspected terror ties. He was ultimately denied entry, removed from the refereeing panel, and sent home like an undesirable criminal.

These incidents have drawn sharp criticism toward both the host nation and FIFA for failing to secure basic guarantees. Human rights groups had warned about racial profiling and intrusive searches, yet FIFA President Giovanni Infantino offered only flippant responses. When asked if FIFA had adopted a passive approach, Infantino said, “We cannot dictate to the U.S. government,” “we are not the kings of the world,” and “sometimes it is better to ‘chill and relax’.”

But that has never been the case. FIFA has traditionally forced accountability on any host daring to politicise the tournament. In the 1966 World Cup in England, the host nation tried to deny the North Korean team access, only for FIFA to strongly intervene and threaten to relocate the entire tournament if any qualified team was barred. England complied. In the 2018 tournament in Russia, the host nation changed its visa laws to introduce a “Fan ID” system that allowed temporary visas to foreign fans — even those with tenuous relationships with Moscow. Russia even complied with serving Budweiser beer at matches. This showed that even a geopolitically isolated host could deliver a successful tournament — miles ahead of this unwelcoming fiasco in the supposed land of the free.

If it weren’t for Mexico, which has dared to represent the true spirit of the tournament, the 2026 World Cup would stand as the most infamous and debacle-clad tournament in history. Combined with profiteering, exorbitant ticket prices, and the general American indifference toward the event, it looks set to remain that way no matter how good the football is.

Infantino has embraced this Trump-flavoured event with enthusiasm, signalling his imprimatur by conjuring the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize and handing it to a dejected Trump, who complained he had missed out to Venezuelan opposition figure María Corina Machado. Infantino has cradled the narcissistic US President like a baby as his bombs and bullets kill soccer players and his foreign policy destroys soccer stadiums. In doing so, he has destroyed the essence of the tournament — already battered by the last edition hosted on the bodies of hundreds of dead overworked foreigners in Qatar’s dictatorship — and hammered another nail into the coffin of viable global sporting tournaments going forward.

Not since the 1936 Berlin Olympics has a global sporting event been such a political football — and even then, Berlin pales in comparison. The Nazi government hosting the Olympics was keen to draw world attention to a rebuilt and recovered Germany, seeking to showcase economic growth and Hitler’s vision of German revival. Behind the scenes, however, the country was enacting one of the most draconian crackdowns on minorities and dissidents. The IOC ignored boycott calls and accepted Nazi assurances, despite the Nuremberg Laws banning Jews (passed the year earlier), the already operational Dachau concentration camp, and the globally reported “Night of the Long Knives.”

FIFA has now said “chill and relax” about similar concerns regarding the state of the USA after ICE squads rounding up people with certain skin colours and reports of soccer moms being shot in the streets.

Hitler temporarily removed antisemitic signage, hid away the Gypsies, and obscured the worst abuses while continuing arrests, camp operations, and planning for expansionist wars. Trump, by contrast, has banned Muslims from entering the country, renditioned the Venezuelan president, armed and supported Israel’s genocide in Gaza, and is conducting a war against Iran that is collapsing the global economy. He has hidden nothing — and the USA is more openly involved in this overt bloodlust and carnage than Hitler’s Olympics ever was. It’s worth thinking about that.

In the streets of Berlin, people from nations across the world walked around a country that masked its ominous authoritarianism. No Africans were strip-searched on the tarmac, no officials were denied access because of their country of origin, and ticket prices were reasonable. Trump’s cup seems less inclusive on the surface.

Though no stranger to being a political football, the decline of global sporting tournaments has progressed incrementally for over a decade. The politicisation of sport now meets the subjective intentions of the Western hemisphere that hosts the sporting bodies — and now executes the aggression, or at least pardons it.

The 2026 World Cup will not be remembered for goals or glory. Russians cannot compete under their flag. They are now banned from the World Cup. Meanwhile, the Palestinian football team lies dead and limbless — more than 421 footballers killed since October 2023, including promising talents like Suleiman al-Obeid, known as the “Palestinian Pelé,” with entire youth squads and generations of players erased. Stadiums reduced to rubble, training grounds turned into graves. The Iranian national stadium lies in ruins from US airstrikes, and no one remembers or cares who won the 1938 World Cup (Italy 4–Hungary 2). They only remember what came next.

From Berlin 1936 to America 2026, global sport has been reduced to a political football. What began as a festival of unity has become a tool of exclusion, profiteering, and imperial power. FIFA’s surrender, Infantino’s “chill and relax” indifference, and the host’s aggression have delivered one of the final blows to the beautiful game as we once knew it.

It’s Eurovision. It’s chess tournaments. It’s every arena that can be weaponised for political ends. This is not just the decline of the World Cup — it is the end of global sport as we have known it.

Injured coal miner Simon Turner, self-represented and totally and permanently disabled, has filed devastating sworn evidence claiming BHP and labour-hire partner Chandler Macleod used a $2 shell company to cap compensation and shield themselves from billions in potential liability.

BHP is now pushing for suppression and take-down orders ahead of the next hearing on 4 June 2026. Michael West Media, named as second respondent, says the public has a right to see the material drawn directly from the court record.

The decoy employer

At the centre of Turner’s case is the identity of his employer. His payslips, PAYG summaries, superannuation contributions and an ATO investigation all identify Chandler Macleod Group Limited as the entity that paid him. Yet both his 2021 workers’ compensation deed and 2022 personal injury settlement with BHP named “Ready Workforce” — a company with paid-up capital of roughly $2 — as his employer.

Turner alleges this was no accident. By tying his claims to the thinly capitalised shell rather than the well-resourced Chandler Macleod Group, the deeds allegedly capped his payout and sought to wall off wider liability for misclassification and underpayment across the contractor workforce.

They knew, says Turner

A published 2017 Federal Circuit Court judgement (Altobelli J, [2017] FCCA 1559) had already ruled, on the identical labour-hire arrangement at BHP’s Mt Arthur mine in the same period, that the worker was employed by Chandler Macleod, not Ready Workforce. He claims he was induced to settle on a false premise and is asking the Court to set both deeds aside for fraud.

Turner broke his back at the Mt Arthur mine in 2015. He received $700,000 inclusive of costs — around $280,000 in hand — for what he quantifies as multi-million-dollar losses. He had been classified, he says, as an office worker earning about $28,000 a year.

The scale of alleged wage theft

An independent financial analysis calculates the per-worker underpayment at approximately $43,900 per year when measured against the “Same Job Same Pay” benchmark confirmed by the Fair Work Commission Full Bench and left undisturbed by the High Court in April 2026.Applied to roughly 273 similarly placed contractor miners at Mt Arthur and Chandler Macleod’s stated national contractor workforce of around 20,000, the cumulative exposure across the BHP–Chandler Macleod arrangement reaches up to $11.4 billion over a 13-year period.

Turner’s circumstances

Now totally and permanently disabled since 2017, Turner says he has lost his home, his career and significant personal relationships. On his evidence he sleeps on the floor of his mother’s garage, receives no Centrelink payments, and has at times extracted his own teeth due to inability to afford dental care.

Michael West Media has reported on the case for some time. BHP is now suing the outlet over that coverage. West argues the attempt to suppress sworn court evidence is the story itself.

Not proven, opportunity to respond

All claims remain allegations based on sworn evidence yet to be tested in full contested hearings. Turner makes no allegation of personal impropriety against any individual lawyer or public figure. BHP, Chandler Macleod and their representatives are entitled to, and have been invited to, respond.

With the 4 June hearing days away, the window for public scrutiny of the material is narrowing.

BHP continues to operate its mining operations while vigorously contesting Turner’s application to reopen the settlements. The case has ramifications far beyond one injured miner, touching on labour-hire practices, wage compliance and corporate accountability at the highest levels of Australian business.

Now they’re coming for the messenger

At the eleventh hour, BHP has cranked up the pressure — not content with burying the evidence, it is now hammering Michael West Media for costs in what amounts to closed court proceedings. Hundreds, possibly thousands, of contractors may have been ripped off on pay. This looks like a blatant attempt to shut down any class action before it starts. BHP is terrified of setting a precedent, hoping the whole thing disappears quietly — while praying it doesn’t trigger the Streisand effect and blow up even bigger. Mainstream media has been hopeless, as usual. Now they’ve come for Michael West, but the chilling implication hangs over every independent outlet in the country.

Strategic litigation, not justice

This has all the hallmarks of strategic litigation for commercial advantage. BHP, with its army of hundreds of PR staff, refused to respond to repeated approaches from Michael West Media. Yet they were lightning fast to sue. They’re weaponising our public courts — funded by taxpayers — to silence a simple enquiry into potential systemic wage theft. All while pocketing around $622 million a year in taxpayer-funded diesel fuel tax credits.

Why are these vast multinationals — subsidised to the tune of half a billion dollars in diesel rebates while caught playing games with their climate obligations — using public courts to shut down stories of genuine public interest? Michael West has gone relatively easy on BHP, focusing on one broken bloke sleeping on the floor at his mum’s. Yet MinterEllison has gone off half-cocked, and BHP is torching whatever social licence it had left by pursuing a champion of independent media.

Questions for BHP shareholders: did the board sign off on this? Why burn shareholder funds on legal warfare and advertising spin when a fair go for injured workers would cost far less and look a hell of a lot better? The case is becoming crystal clear. On display is a direct attack on a vital public institution: an independent media organisation that remains one of the few reliable traders of truth in a marketplace flooded with fearmongers and compromised peddlers.

David vs Goliath

Michael West has a tough skin — four legal threats a year on average, endless court cases. Self-representation is often looked down on by judges, yet he does it to prove the point: this is pure David versus Goliath. David is a small independent outfit with a handful of staff breaking big public interest stories. Goliath is a $300 billion giant that funds media, politics and endless lawyers. West has a high risk appetite — you need one in this game — but the threats are taking their toll.

The emotional energy, the physical debilitation, the duress. The isolation of holding so much of the independent media space on his shoulders with a tight crew of colleagues. The confirmation that the game is rigged to protect the powerful, while former mates in legacy media stay silent. It can only be offset by the huge public support, the value of the stories, and the knowledge that MWM is doing the right thing in a landscape full of cowards and pretenders.

A standard-bearer under fire

Michael West has become part of the furniture for any Australian news junkie. Held up as the standard-bearer of real investigative journalism, or ignored in contempt by a mainstream media that knows he runs rings around them, he and his small team have employed and mentored dozens of journalists over the years. In a media landscape increasingly dominated by fear and spin, MWM has become a vital public interest institution — a national treasure at a time when power is tightening its grip.

Now this small, independent outfit faces an existential threat aimed squarely at West’s own home.“Good old fashioned corporate bullying by BHP,” West calls it. “Counting on money beating a publisher, using shareholders’ funds.” True to form, he is self-representing with no crowdfunding, determined to defend the bigger principle at stake.

This isn’t just about one injured miner or one outlet. It’s about whether big, taxpayer-funded corporates can use our courts and our taxes to muzzle the truth. The public is watching.

Teal independents are set to announce the formation of a new political party. This raises important questions about how the group intends to make an impact and how it will affect the burgeoning independent movements emerging from the other side of politics.

The prospective Teal party is a niche political grouping united by a few standout features: a strong position on climate, claims of being anti-corruption, conservative economic positions, and representation of wealthy electorates with traditionally conservative voting blocs.

In a majority government environment, the Teals have struggled to achieve the impact they had hoped for. Unlike Oakeshott, Wilkie and Windsor, who held the balance of power in the Gillard minority government and helped deliver one of the most dynamic parliamentary terms in modern Australian history, today’s Teals have lacked comparable influence. Caught between a Labor majority and a disintegrating Coalition, they have been trapped in the quicksand of profound political change. They now seek strength in numbers rather than strength through genuine grassroots democracy.

The affluent centrist — with progressive leanings — has become the puritanical core of the post-John Howard hellscape that is #Auspol, and the Teals have come to recognise this. After spending decades straining to be the “good guys” in Howard’s world, they have now become that world itself. While the right has moved on, exploring new ideas and challenging orthodoxies, the progressive centrist realm remains trapped deep in the neoliberal era, acting as fervent preservationists of a failing status quo. Those among them must finally recognise that they are not rebels or moral guardians but an entirely acceptable part of the managed world the powerful want us to inhabit. The right no longer seeks to preserve the Howard matrix; the conservative centrists do, and they are prepared to drag every last person on the left into their centrist vortex to maintain the illusion that they alone hold the answers.

The Teals’ success — or lack thereof — and Labor’s shallow electoral grip are not mandates from an Australian population satisfied with its political choices; they are protest votes. After decades of those protest votes being wasted on the uniparty and now on ineffective crossbenchers, they are flowing toward the most opportunistic and disingenuous political parties of all. Pauline Hanson’s One Nation is the natural by-product of that dissatisfaction and despair — the inevitable result when ideas are locked up by a disingenuous political class and the progressive elites who orbit it. The centrist party the Teals aspire to build can only be conceived from a level of comfort and insulation not shared by most Australians, and with an ignorance that many cannot afford.

The Teal party, which is mostly conservative and currently courting disenfranchised Liberal MPs and their voters, is also reshaping the public perception of what an independent is. In doing so, it disregards the organic independent movement that could spring up outside the leafy green suburbs. A confederation of Teal independents risks isolating genuine left-leaning independent movements from the outset. Teals, now more accustomed to fortifying their seats against resurgent major-party candidates than presenting bold alternatives to poor policy, will disassociate themselves from anything deemed too radical to unsettle their narrow majorities. In a short time, lofty ideals have been replaced by sandbagging Menzies-era seats (hardly inspirational). Zoe Daniel lost her seat to a reheated Tim Wilson, and the pattern is clear.

The more progressive Teals, such as Helen Haines and David Pocock, have operated more in the tradition of genuine community independents — allowing their electorates to shape their positions on national issues. They risk damaging their brand by aligning with the new Teal-led party. There is a distinct “toy village” quality to much of Teal politics: they stake out moral positions on issues they cannot meaningfully influence, while remaining timid or silent on matters where their concentrated influence in wealthy seats could actually shift policy. Some understand the difference far better than others.

True independents should enter Canberra knowing their community placed them there, not because they offer a sweeter packaging of their major-party predecessor. The election of an independent is, by its very nature, a bold statement, and their representation should reflect that. How can the Teals claim to be the frontline of independent resistance to major-party politics when not one of the seven Teals (Allegra Spender, Kate Chaney, Zoe Daniel, Monique Ryan, Sophie Scamps, Zali Steggall, Kylea Tink) supported a Labor bill to increase tax on superannuation earnings above $3 million? How can they credibly work together when some (Kylea Tink and Sophie Scamps, with Andrew Wilkie) tried to amend a motion on Israel’s actions, only for the rest to support the pro-Israel motion and defeat it?

This wave of independents has been dominated by affluent, conservative Teals rather than grassroots working-class voices from the left for a simple reason: time and money. Running as a serious independent in a safe Labor or Coalition seat demands significant personal resources and networks that most ordinary Australians lack. By formalising a party centred on these wealthy electorates, the Teals risk raising the barrier to entry even higher. What began as a challenge to the major parties is hardening into an inhibitor of broader independent politics — one shaped by class as much as by conviction. In working-class seats weary of safe-seat Labor MPs, many initially hoped the Teal model might extend leftward. That illusion has now been dispelled.

One Nation, the very phenomenon cited as justification for forming the Teal party, draws its strength from a growing disgruntled working class and claims a desire to break the status quo. With no real intention to rock the boat and nothing more to offer than neutral pragmatism, there is an element of both folly and hubris in the elite independents’ hope for incrementalism in a rapidly changing political landscape.

Rather than forming a party of select independents, a looser confederation could prove more effective — aligning on key policies while still allowing genuine representation of each community’s distinct voice. The party structure will inevitably diminish the vibrancy of independents and their true superpower: acting as a real conduit between the electorate and Canberra. These independents should be travelling the country, promoting other independents, recognising the diversity of Australian voices, and contrasting them with their own — not building gated communities in hostile territory that do little more than help their residents sleep better at night.

Potentially the most consequential outcome of the Teals’ partyfication of independent politics will be the further marginalisation of the independent left in a hostile political landscape. With the neoliberal, pencil-pushing ALP still claiming to be the party of the worker while captured by corporate unions and lawyers, the Coalition evaporating in incompetence and greed, the Greens chasing vibes and identity politics, and the Teals claiming to be the bastion of the independent movement, where else does a marginalised working-class and middle Australia turn but to the party sponsored by Gina Rinehart that claims to understand them?

The strength of independents lies in their independence — a fact that may be lost on some of the independents themselves. Zali Steggall, citing the need to counter the rise of the far right, said: “The challenge is to build something that expands our impact while preserving the independence and community-first values that define us.” Yet the essence of independence has already been compromised by the very proposition of a party. After a period of struggle, the Teals have not achieved the political impact they sought. With their energy now consumed by sandbagging Menzies-era seats rather than pursuing bold reform, the Teals have become part of the furniture. Far from challenging the status quo, they merely decorate it. The question is not whether they deserve a party, but why they bothered.

The rise of One Nation to the preferred party of opposition is a story that requires attention, as polling recently demonstrates a major swing towards the far-right party, reflecting an electoral shift that is poorly understood by those in the major party brains trusts and irresponsibly toyed with by the concentrated right wing media.

Recent polls paint a dramatic picture: Roy Morgan’s post-budget SMS poll (May 13-14 2026) showed One Nation on 32% primary vote; ahead of Labor on 28.5% and the Coalition on just 16.5%. Newspoll gave them around 27%, Resolve 24%, and Freshwater 26%. One Nation even won the Farrer by-election in May 2026 with a commanding primary vote. This is no longer a fringe protest, it is a vote that has grown rapidly, and it is a genuine challenge to the two-party system.

While the Australian political spectrum embraces or recoils at the prospect of Pauline Hanson’s One Nation Party receiving a potential power-share in Australian politics, those who celebrate One Nation’s ascendancy do so through pure political disenfranchisement, while the detractors critique the rise of the far right through a misguided condescension: both missing some of the causes behind the symptoms manifesting in different ways on both sides of politics.

Sliding door moments. It was 2004, Pauline Hanson had just gotten out of jail, and was a pariah. She was in between fish and chip shops, and cast asunder from the political mainstream; including the concentrated press that used her up and threw her away like a washed up Hollywood star. After being repudiated by the majority of the country, Hanson’s return was cast on the backdrop of a country going to sleep.

In the background a neoliberal hum was ringing in John Howard’s Canberra. Australia was beginning a period of deep ideological stagnation under the helm of a new breed of politician.

This isn’t a story of mockery, or ridicule that frames some of the analysis of Pauline Hanson and One Nation. This is a piece about the power of persistance, and how perseverance, and a lot of money from Gina Rinehart, and the absence of a coherent left can go a long way in a deliberately politically stagnant Australia.

Hanson spent ten years in the political wilderness after her appearance on Dancing With the Stars in 2004, doing media and running unsuccessful independent campaigns, before reclaiming the leadership of One Nation like a redheaded Rocky from Ipswich. In this time John Howard ceded to Rudd/Gillard and back to Abbott, and a neoliberal autopilot carried on — one part mining boom, one part global war on terror, and equal parts not good enough. The training montage of Hanson’s Hail-Mary return into politics occurred during a decade of Coalition revisionism and Labor playing small target politics, and the rise of populism in the West.

The internet had nebulised the voting bloc, and the politics had eroded public sentiment. Post-pandemic Australia became a different political landscape, ending the Coalition’s reign and giving Labor another chance to do not much else different. The neoliberal autopilot had become a conveyor belt, and Labor demonstrated that it would do nothing more than offer much of the same policy imperatives as its predecessor: tax cuts, AUKUS, oil and gas licences to foreign tax-dodging giants.

Labor’s first term, laden with the disappointment of small target government, was followed by its second term of economic, diplomatic and military support for policies that many voters saw as disconnected from domestic suffering (like Israel’s genocide in Gaza), while rents soared, wages stagnated, and essential services creaked. The working class watched on as their concerns were sidelined.

On the left, the abandonment of working class politics over identity politics has disconnected it from a swathe of people in Australia who may hold working class values but now ascribe them to One Nation. That’s more than a strange anomaly, it’s the mistake of the major party left and the ideologies of the further left that created a vacuum. Economic anxiety, cultural displacement, and the sense that no one in Canberra was listening became fuel. Many on the left doubled down on abstract theory while the battlers looked for someone who spoke their language — even if imperfectly. Some of the blame in the political shift lays with the left alternatives and minor parties that have failed to connect with marginalised working class communities with tangible soultions.

This isn’t about some concessions to load into the right, it’s the opposite. It’s about identifying the struggles of Australians through the lens of Marxist economic fundamentalism, and reaching out to disenfranchised Australians with better ideas.

Hanson and her party are totally neoliberal, partnered with Gina Rinehart, and less about the poor and struggling than they might want to admit. Unashamedly Trumpist, a fan of the US imperial status quo, and a friend of the media, One Nation is no more than a protest vessel riddled with contradictions. They rail against globalism and foreign ownership while accepting major support from mining interests. Gina Rinehart’s associates have gifted One Nation a private plane worth over $1.5 million, along with millions in donations from executives like Ian Plimer and Adam Giles. Hanson has taken multiple undeclared or taxpayer-claimed flights on Rinehart-linked jets, yet the party pushes economic nationalism, protectionism, tariffs, and “Aussies first” welfare: quite the contrast when it comes to One Nation’s claim to be the party of the battler.

The John Howard guide to government, passed down successfully through every bipartisan iteration of government to this day, has revelled in an atrophied cultural malaise on three decades of a badly managed mining boom. And apart from Argentina, a few remaining ingrained African post-colonial nations, and the planet Arrakis, there isn’t much to compare this country to. The Coalition talk about making Toranas, and the ALP delivered a budget dismissing no social welfare to poor children, while house prices remained a generational insult. The major parties have had decades to provide the conditions to avoid One Nation, and Labor — coiled in a box claiming it could be an alternative — has only come to government to drive the same John Howard era neoliberal jalopy with a Medicare bumper sticker.

Seeing the sliding doors moment now and the ‘Return of the Pauline’, the point where voter patience snapped, should terrify the establishment. One Nation’s return is not the disease. It is the fever. The real illness is three decades of managed decline dressed up as responsible government: a badly managed mining boom that left dust and empty towns, a political class more interested in international virtue than domestic wages, and a media environment that mocks the symptoms while protecting the causes.

The question isn’t whether Hanson deserves power. The real question is why so many Australians now believe the major parties have left them no better choice. Hanson offers no genuine escape. She delivers only a loud, Rinehart-funded echo chamber wrapped in nationalist clothing. Her party rails against the elites while cosying up to mining billionaires. It speaks for battlers while protecting the resource aristocracy, and it trades Canberra’s neoliberal autopilot for Washington’s imperial one. Its a shame that there isn’t a visible alternative.

Until that vacuum is filled with real economic sovereignty, serious material relief for the working class, and a politics that puts Australian citizens first, not donors, not ideology, not foreign powers or mining magnates, the doors will keep sliding toward more disruption, not less. Pauline Hanson may be the fever, but without a proper cure from the left, Australia risks mistaking the symptom for the medicine.
